Abstract
Reviews the critical reception and impact of the work of José Enrique Rodó in Cuba from early reviews of "Ariel" in the first decades of the 20th century to assessments in the early 21st century. Proposes a parabola that moves from enthusiastic early admiration, through left-wing criticism peaking during the early phase of the Cuban Revolution, to renewed respect for Rodó's idealism in more recent semi-capitalist times.
