Abstract
One of the core uses of Esperanto as a bridge language relates to the establishment of contacts between people from different origins and backgrounds – between national others – so as one can learn and exchange thanks to the other’s differences and to the diversity that composes the Esperanto community. If the philosophical and political programmes linked to Esperanto provide Esperantists with ways of relating to differences, how did these ideas change and undergo updates throughout time? In this text, I discuss how concepts on language, national and cultural differences and on otherness appeared historically among Esperantists and how they evolved on the basis of ideas on nationality, humanity, non-nationality, internationality and cosmopolitanism by studying the development of the inner idea, from the pioneers to the present day.
