Abstract
Broekhuijsen is to be congratulated for amassing and describing so many Netherlandish manuscripts, for finding patterns and creating useful categories within the corpus of the Masters of the Dark Eyes, and for finding the sources behind their iconography. Although her book represents the painstaking work of several decades, the series editors have done this book and their series a disservice for allowing publication of the unrevised Ph.D. dissertation. Monographs dedicated to Netherlandish manuscripts are few and far between, which means that even with its theoretical and stylistic anaemia, Broekhuijsen’s will become the standard reference book on the Masters of the Dark Eyes for the next century.
