Abstract

Aspects of the life an experience of a young Scot who settled in Uruguay in the mid-19th century and who wrote a guide for would be fellow British emigrants to Uruguay. The guide was part of the 1862 International Exhibition in London and in it he highlights the benefits that await the entrepreneur who chooses to settle in rural Uruguay at a time of fast modernisation in cattle and especially sheep rearing.
