Abstract
The opening chapter to a set of fifteen scholarly essays on medieval manuscript miscellanies. This introduction suggests ways of understanding the medieval multi-text manuscript, and highlights various problems in defining the genre. It also outlines ways in which these volumes were read and used by contemporary readers.
