Abstract
A 30,000-word essay on the ideas of Rodó which won an international competition organised by the Sociedad Rodoniana of Montevideo in 2012. It is structured in three main parts. It begins with an evaluation of the major criticisms addressed to Rodó's work since publication in the early 20th century and moves on to study, in turn and in line with the theme of the competition, the influence of Rodó's ideas in the Americas (concentrating on the USA and Uruguay) and the relevance of his work to the present day (focusing on living the good life and on the cultural identity of Latin America); it concludes with an assessment of the role of the intellectual in the subcontinent which follows from his work as a whole, namely to defend identity within a context of consensus, dignity and equality and to reject radicalisms and dogmatic thinking.
