Abstract

We present a curricular response to the challenge of inadequate training in ethical conduct for researchers in low- and middle-income countries. This curricular response is informed by regional and local cultural expertise and is designed to meet an urgent need for effective regulatory frameworks and improved research ethics review processes, given the high disease burden and the tremendous growth of biomedical research activities in these countries. Focusing on postgraduate students at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College, Tanzania, the chapter describes a bioethics curriculum that emphasizes theoretical values and practical skills required to conduct research with human and animal subjects.
