Abstract

This paper looks at the evidence for ideas prevalent about the origins and identity of the English prior to the compilation of Bede's influential Historia Ecclesiastica. Inter alia it suggests that the Germnaic-speaking groups in the sixth century were engaged with broader Continental alignments rather than isolated primitves.
