Abstract
Thirty years on from the publication of Machiavellian Intelligence (Byrne & Whiten, 1988), it is time to consider how the ideas in it have influenced understanding of the evolution of intelligence, how they have been tested (and sometimes misunderstood), and whether they are still relevant today. This essay attempts to do so.
