Abstract
This volume embraces the practice of translating the poetry that emanates from the space we in the West have called China since the sixteenth century, and what is termed "Chinese Poetry" here refers to poetry written in modern standard Chinese over the past century, and that written in wenyan 文言 over the preceding two thousand or more years. While this volume offers a panorama of essays on translating both twentieth- and twenty-first century poetry, and the pre-modern canon, what is welcome is the prominence given in the volume to contemporary poetry. Indeed, two thirds of the contributions deal with poetry in the modern that was a long time coming.
