Abstract

This article explores Burns Chronicle reports of manuscript forgery from c.1892 to c.1978. In doing so, it provides a history of the Burns Chronicle from its beginning during the late nineteenth century and into the latter half of the twentieth century, with a focus upon the alleged forgeries of manuscripts relating to Robert Burns. Part of the story of the alleged forgeries of Robert Burns manuscripts is Alexander Howland ‘Antique’ Smith, who faced trial for forgeries not only of Robert Burns manuscripts but also, for example, manuscripts relating to Walter Scott and Jacobites.
