Abstract
Digital equity platforms are often viewed as alternatives to traditional entrepreneurial finance. We show instead that they frequently extend relationships formed in private capital markets. We develop the concept of hybrid digital staging, in which a venture enters its first equity crowdfunding campaign after one or more private equity rounds and with the continued involvement of prior investors. Using 789 initial campaigns launched on Crowdcube and matched to Beauhurst financing records, we find that 64% of classifiable ventures had completed at least one private round before entering the platform. Because platforms cannot negotiate individualized contracts with dispersed investors, information accumulated during the private phase may instead be reflected in campaign design. Conditional on pre-campaign observables, hybrid staging is associated with funding goals approximately two-thirds higher than those of otherwise comparable ventures. Goals also increase with the depth of the prior financing relationship: by about 22% for each additional private round and 27% for each additional year of staging history. This pattern is more consistent with information accumulated through repeated financing and monitoring than with a purely dichotomous certification effect. Access to this pathway is uneven and state contingent. Female-led ventures are about 10 percentage points less likely to enter crowdfunding with prior staging; this gap is indistinguishable from zero outside the COVID-19 period but rises to roughly 25 percentage points during it. Digital equity platforms therefore extend the reach of the private financing system, carrying both accumulated private information and inequalities in access into digital equity markets.
