Abstract
The (001) surface of the high-T-c superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 has been studied using high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The surface of this material was usually found to terminate with the CuO2 plane corresponding to a sequence of bulk-Y-CuO2. There is some evidence of partial oxygen loss from this terminating plane. The different terminating surfaces of (001) cleavage planes of YBa2Cu4O8 and YBa2Cu3O7 are discussed.
