Historical Context of state formation in the Middle East: structure and agency

Abstract

The formatin of Middle East states was he outcome of two major factors: the historical inheritance faced by state builders and the strategies of state builders. The historical context includes pre-modern state building and the age of Western imperialism (and the nationalism it engendered). Agency of state-builders is explored over five different periods. The parallel evolution of the states system is then examined.
