Abstract
In Wytze Gs. Hellinga’s _Kopij en druk in de Nederlanden_ (1962), the author provided a cultural overview of the book, beginning in the fifteenth century. In revisiting and updating the author's groundbreaking history, we are adding the prehistory of the printed book, namely, the hand-written book around 1400, which was largely a courtly phenomenon. Netherlandish manuscript makers emancipated themselves from their courtly neighbours to the south and east.
