Abstract
A comparison of the earlier and later texts of the Vita Hamonis monachi, magnae sanctitatis viri (d. 1173), reveals some striking differences in the story that is told. How far does the attempt made in 1243/1244 to obtain the canonization of Savigny's saints explain this discrepancy? Why did that attempt fail? This article sets out to explore these questions and to identify the distinctive characteristics of Savigniac sanctity. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
