Abstract
The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), such as ChatGPT and Deep-L, has been met with a mix of enthusiasm, scepticism, and curiosity, yet its impacts on language education have been deep and sudden. The evidence of its effectiveness has yet to be established, and there are concerns about its wide adoption. In particular, it is the potential for GenAI to produce unreliable, untrustworthy, or harmful content. In this entry, we present some of the ethical issues that have arisen by the sudden uptake of GenAI by language learners.
