Abstract

The present chapter summaries the current state and perspectives of fuel cells and hydrogen energy. First of all the relevant fuels and fuel chemistry are discussed focusing on hydrogen, hydrocarbons and oxygenates, then the basics of fuel cell technology and applications are discussed. The different types of fuel cells are presented with particular attention on solid oxide fuel cells, and thermodynamics and the factors influencing efficiency reviewed.
