Foreign policy decision-making: a practical guide for the FPDM-curious

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

International Relations scholars are often curious about foreign policy decision-making (FPDM) approaches, but the sub-field can seem confusing. This practical guide organises research around agents and their perceptions, decision-making units and their dynamics, and the ever-present concern with the effects of situation and context. Covering both classic works as well as cutting-edge research on emotions, motivations, and time, this review works to make the sub-field of FPDM accessible to IR scholars whose work might benefit from understanding its numerous perspectives, frameworks, and ongoing challenges.
