Abstract

This chapter discusses the structural properties of Steiner systems and especially the characterization of special systems by structural properties. A prototype of this is the characterization of classical projective planes by the “theorems” of Desargues and Pappus. The chapter discusses inequalities connecting the parameters of a Steiner system and the determining of systems that attain the bounds.
