Exploring the Boundaries of the Poetic Text: A Study of Spatial Representation in Theodor Fontane’s Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

This paper uses the analysis of spatial representation in literature as a methodological focus for the discussion of genre boundaries in Fontane's travel writing. It is argued that whereas many critics have sought to analyse the "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg" as symbolic works of imaginative literature, at least three different kinds of texts can be identified according to their referential structures. Fontane does include artistics texts in the collection, but these are rare. Fontane makes the reader aware of these differences.
