Abstract

The reaction of a monocyclic gamma-lactam with the serine protease elastase occurs via reversible formation of a hydrolytically labile acyl-enzyme complex; in contrast analogous beta-lactam inhibitors irreversibly react to form a relatively stable acyl-enzyme complex.
