Abstract
This article details the composition of the Swedish army during the period 1628-1632 - the four years during which Gustav II Adolf commanded his forces during the Thirty Years' War. The article follows the army from its preperation to its invasion of the Holy Roman Empire. The piece shows the multi-national nature of the army and discusses the distribution of infantry, cavalry and artillery within it. In so doing it challanges assumptions about the size and command structure of the army and shows that allied armies played a more prominent role in the Swedish war machine than previously thought.
