Effect of pressure gradients and line-tying on the magnetic stability of coronal loops

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

An analytical solution for the stability of a simple magnetostatic field is derived, including the effects of the dense photosphere and of pressure gradients. A simple equilibrium state is chosen, and the effects of line-tying and of pressure gradients are considered. The model loop consists of a uniform cylinder of axial flux, surrounded by a purely azimuthal field and separated by a current sheet of thickness 2(delta). The sharp pinch is studied in which delta goes to zero.
