Abstract
In Israeli prisons, a hunger strike is a powerful means of prison resistance. Prisons and detention centers are places of power, but also resistance, and Palestinian hunger strikers seek to use the authorities’ apparent strength against them. Deciding to embark on such a strike is one step in a lengthy process of struggle to make changes in the prisoners’ lives and conditions. Ultimately, the prisoners’ willingness to deprive their own bodies of food and to put their lives on the line exemplifies Bargu’s concept of necroresistance, put simply in the slogan “death or freedom.”
