Down from human rights activity to activism in Kyrgyzstan

This article examines the deteriorating environment for human rights defenders and civil society organisations in Kyrgyzstan, tracing how state repression, nationalist rhetoric, Russian influence and the persecution of prominent activists have weakened independent civic oversight. It argues that, despite civil society’s crucial role in defending rights, resolving conflicts and compensating for weak state responses during crises such as COVID-19, its future depends on sustained international support, stronger legal protections and greater accountability for abuses.
