Disparaging Doctors and Mocking Masks: Medical and Media Relations during the 1918-19 Influenza Pandemic in Southern California

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

A short blog outlining my research into cultures of mask wearing in Southern California during the 1918-19 Influenza Pandemic. Following presenting this work at the MEDEP 2024 Conference at the University of Bucharest, the MEDEP team requested I produce this blog drawing on the themes of my conference paper. The blog thus discusses attitudes towards mask wearing during the 1918-19 pandemic as expressed by both the medical establishment and the popular press during the period. In doing so, objections towards mask wearing demonstrates the broader contentious relationship between doctors and newspapermen during the early 20th century in the region.
