Abstract
[This article presents a contextual analysis of Dante’s authorial strategy in Inferno X, opening up an original perspective on the central dialogue between Cavalcante and Dante (vv. 52-72). The first part examines Dante’s distinctive reception of Epicurean philosophy; the second, the Scriptural and theological subtexts which underpin the episode. The third part shows how Dante, with supreme artistry, combines a meticulous organisation of his historical material with the mechanisms of time-long-sightedness, freeze-frame, and prophecy. The fourth part proposes a possible critical solution to the mysterious and ambiguous dialogue, described by Sapegno as one of «the most difficult and discussed passages of the poem»].
