Abstract

Wavelength-scale microstructure was used to control light emission from thin films. It is shown that lateral microstructure can be incorporated into an LED structure giving a doubling of the efficiency of the device. The microstructure gives control of the spectrum and polarization of the emitted light. These improvements are made by extracting the light normally trapped in waveguide modes and wasted.
