    Abstract

Technology plays a significant role in formal language instruction as well as in informal language learning. This role has increased in recent years, not least as a result of the pandemic, and is likely to continue to grow as new technologies are developed and new uses for them are found. In this overview, we briefly describe the development of the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL), before reviewing its contributions to language learning and teaching. we conclude by considering some of the challenges to the successful use of technology as well as future directions and ways in which technology may have a potentially transformative impact on the research field.
