Abstract
Sea fishing and competing demands on the use of coastal land both pose problems, for the sustainable use of the natural environment, not least, when the resolution of those problems runs the risk of creating unemplqwnent in communities with narrowlly-based economies. This article outlines these problems, drawing on some recent experience from two areas in Scotland: one that is currently facing a significant threat to its economic well being, and another that has bad a very chequered history, including much economic difficulty, but has also undergone some regeneration. It then draws conclusions about the principles that should guide economic regeneration in such regions.
