Abstract
This article proposes a reading of the novel El alquiler del mundo (2010), by Spanish writer Pablo Sánchez as an imaginative product of the ideology of contemporary capitalism in Spain and a critical response to that same ideology. The result is the portrayal of current Spain as a mysterious and fantastic society, in which individuals experience the economic and social relations proper to what Guy Debord termed ‘la société du spectacle’ as subjugating forces out of their control. Through the main protagonist, this novel shows the destructive effects on personal memory and identity of reification and the mediation of images, while exploring the possibility of a counter-discourse for the self-restoration of the individual.
