Calculated Decompression as a Substitute for Democratization: Syria

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Examines the Syrian regime's attempt to adapt to pressures for democratisation through a decompression of political control. Looks, also, at obstacles to and forces for democratization--the Ba'th regime, a pluralising social structure, including aspects of civil society; and elite strategies of dealing with the bourgeoisie, Islamic opposition and the mass public.
