Building the Cavendish and time at Cambridge

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter, in a multi-author book about Maxwell, traces his part in the co-evolution of the role of a professor at Cambridge, the place of physics in the curriculum, and the role of experiment in teaching, showing how, under Maxwell’s leadership, experimental physics in Cambridge became centralised in the Cavendish Laboratory that he built. It is based on a range of fresh evidence, including newly discovered correspondence, and details of nearly 70 students associated with Maxwell. It places Maxwell’s attitude to integrated teaching of experimental physics through research within the context of his time and the similar approaches of his contemporaries
