Abstract
Bioacoustics is the study of sound in the environment. Bioacoustics techniques can be used actively, to find animals or objects in the ocean, or passively, to simply listen to the noises that animals make. Because sound travels quickly in the ocean, it is an important tool for marine mammals in foraging, reproduction, and communication. This article details how sound is produced, processed, and used by marine mammals and the various bioacoustic techniques employed to make these discoveries.
