N2 - Incised stones with Pictish symbols are found across northern and eastern Scotland. Some were discovered in association with burial monuments, but the relationship between them is regarded as tenuous. Rather than examining the direct relationship of symbol stones to cemeteries, this contribution seeks to re-assess these relationships through a closer look at the barrow and cairn cemeteries themselves. In Pictland, barrow and cairn cemeteries are located on elevated terraces overlooking and sometimes directly connecting with rivers. These can be extensive, with up to forty-six barrows.
