Abstract
This study (13,500 words) analyses the importance of the records of cases of contested heraldry in the court of chivalry for our understanding of historical attitudes to art, architecture, books and documents. These records have not been used by church historians or historians of material culture in the past, but they are extremely rich in evidence.
