Agency government in Louis XIV’s France: the military treasurers of the elite forces

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This article shows how there were not merely state officials and private entrepreneurial contractors who undertook the delivery of services for the early modern French state, but also 'agencies' run at arm's length by government ministries. These were not dissimilar in some ways to government agencies in the present day, and I use the smaller military treasurers who paid the elite military units of the French army as an example of this phenomenon. 8000 words.
