Abstract
This essay details how the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath became part of twentieth-century Scottish (and international)public discourse, particularly as a result of work by the scholar-novelist Agnes Mure Mackenzie and the literary critic Mary Paton Ramsay. The story of their work in this area has not been told before.
