Abstract
This article examines the preface of Aelianus Tacticus’ Tactical Theory – a little known work, but one which offers some fascinating insights into literary and intellectual activity in Trajanic Rome. In particular, it analyses the dialogue that Aelian enters into with Frontinus and Trajan, and what it reveals about Greek and Roman literary/intellectual/cultural interactions.
