This fellowship, awarded by the Head of Engagement with Research at the University of St Andrews, was one I shaped by bringing together expertise from the School of Art History, the School of Medicine, and the School of Computer Science. The project was realised at the Dundee Science Centre in close collaboration with CVI Scotland.
The fellowship investigates the critical issue of visual accessibility in museums and galleries, with the aim of advancing inclusivity in both physical and digital cultural spaces.
In-depth research identifies the challenges faced by individuals with limited vision, uncovering barriers that currently hinder engagement with cultural heritage.
Curatorial practices are examined to highlight areas requiring improvement in accessibility and interpretation.
Actionable recommendations provide practical guidance to museums and cultural institutions, supporting meaningful changes in accessibility.
A key strength of the project is its integration of heritage and climate change, underlining the urgency of preserving cultural heritage in an era of environmental challenges.
