Description

An award to support research into "The Kingdom of Culture: Education, Slavery, and the Free Exercise of the Imagination." This project explores the historical and literary relationship between religious liberty, liberal education, and American civil rights in the long 19th century; it seeks to recover the history of a transatlantic network of black and white humanists who developed political and literary initiatives to rally opposition to slavery and propagate the ethics of a free society.
