I was awarded a Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung of Germany in order to spend twelve months researching in the Historische Seminar of the Albert-Ludwigs Universitaet Freiburg-im-Breisgau: September 2007-August 2008. Sponsored by Prof Dr Ronald G. Asch.
I spent 2 months refreshing my German before taking up the Fellowship. The Fellowship allowed me to deepen and widen my understanding of Franco-German relations and internal Imperial politics and military organisation in the 17th and 18th centuries. The bulk of the work will be useful for the next two major projects, but I have also profitted from the contacts I made: I gave seminar papers or lectures at 3 German universities and 1 Swiss university on my research; and I have built on these contacts since this time.
