THEIR YEAR: Historians Dr Derek Patrick and Dr Billy Kenefick have both made a massive contribution to The Courier's special commemorative First World War supplements over the past four years, and our book The Scottish Soldier's Story, a compilation of excerpts from those supplements. Derek, a lecturer at St Andrews University, and Billy, who retired from Dundee University last year, founded the Great War Dundee project (greatwardundee.com) to tell the story of the 30,490 men who left Dundee to fight in the First World War and of the people left at home. By recounting the impact of the Great War on Dundee, the project also involves the community, from primary schools to history groups, by inviting local people to contribute and share their own family stories. PANEL VIEW: Dr Patrick and Dr Kenefick have helped to bring the momentous events of 100 years ago to today's audiences, helping to ensure the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten.
