Research interests
1. My primary research focuses on the undiminished Divine freedom and redeemed human freedom in the theology of Jonathan Edwards. More broadly, I explore this study in the Reformed scholastic tradition to determine the extent to which human freedom operates under divine providence and goverment, without collapsing human freedom into an ontological conflation with divine freedom. My current specific focus is on Christology and freedom, particularly the freedom of Jesus’ human nature in relation to the divine nature of the Second Person of the Trinity.
2. I am developing a new model of human freedom by adapting Kierkegaard’s concept of subjective human freedom and situating it under Edwards’ framework of objective divine freedom.
3. I am currently writing about Petrus van Mastricht’s influence on Jonathan Edwards' doctrine of continual creation.
4. As a secondary interest, I engage with theological discussions on free will, particularly in relation to the philosophy of action, including the relationship between causation and intention. Additionally, in my military work, I am focusing on the philosophical ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in warfare to develop a framework for governmental decision-making.
Academic/Professional Qualification
I earned my B.A. in Theology from Korea Baptist Theological University/Seminary in 2010 on a full scholarship after being selected as a military chaplain candidate. Immediately afterward, I pursued an M.Div. with a concentration in Historical and Theological Studies (2010–2013) at Gateway Seminary (California, US) receiving the Bridge Leadership Fund for one year. During my time there, I worked as a research assistant for Dr Chris Chun and participated in youth and college ministry at Sonoma Korean Baptist Church.
After graduating, I joined the Republic of Korea Army as a captain chaplain in 2014. While serving, I was selected for a study-abroad program at the University of St. Andrews, UK, from 2021 to 2022. With the support of the Korean Army, I completed a Master of Letters in Systematic and Historical Theology, writing my thesis on the extent of human freedom in Jonathan Edwards' theology over the course of a year. After returning to work in Seoul for a year, I became a major chaplain and was selected again for the same program, enabling me to pursue a PhD at the same institution under the supervision of Dr Steve Holmes. I am now a PhD candidate in Systematic and Historical Theology, focusing my research on Divine and Human Freedom in the theology of Jonathan Edwards.
