Research overview

I am a PhD candidate at the University of St. Andrews, under the supervision of Professor Alex Long. I received both my BA and MA in Philosophy from the University of Turin, Italy, graduating with 110 cum laude in both degrees. My BA thesis focused on the relation between Plato and the Stoics, while my MA thesis examined key issues in Panaetius' and Posidonius' cosmological frameworks.

My PhD project investigates the key elements of doctrinal continuity and divergence between the so-called 'Middle Stoics' and earlier Stoic philosophy, with a particular focus on physical and cosmological issues. I aim to show that Middle Stoicism, often seen as lacking unity and coherence, should be recognized as a critical and cohesive phase in the Stoic tradition. I argue that figures such as Panaetius and Posidonius, while maintaining significant cosmological continuity with earlier Stoics, broaden the scope of inquiry within the study of Stoic physics.
