Research overview

Sixue started her PhD in 2023. Her project aims to explore the vocal learning behaviour of bats using a captive colony of pale spear nosed bats (Phyllostomus discolor) as a study species. The project aims to (1) Determine the position of bats in the vocal learning continuum, and (2) Analyse the biological reasons why certain species have VPL ability. The project could help us gain a better understanding of the common features of human and non-human vocal learning, revealing the mechanisms underlying the evolution of human spoken language.
