Research overview

Simon F. Taeuber is a Doctoral Candidate in International Relations and a Fellow of the Centre for Global Law and Governance at the University of St Andrews, where he also teaches on several modules. Mr Taeuber is a Cusanuswerk scholar, the foundation of the German Episcopal Conference within the funding framework of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Since 2021, he is also a Visiting Researcher at Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina.

His main areas of interest and research include Sino–European and Sino–Latin American relations, norm change and contestation, the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on normative fabrics, and disorder in social systems. He works on Latin American conceptions of order and the role of the BRI for the same. He holds an MSc in Global Studies from Roskilde University (Denmark) and a BA in International Business from Duale Hochschule Baden-Wuerttemberg Stuttgart (Germany). His work on norm contestation and Sino-European relations has been published in Cooperation and Conflict, the Journal of Rising Powers and Global Governance, and the Air Force Journal of European, Middle Eastern, and African Affairs. Mr Taeuber won the Critical Edge Alliance’s Best Student Paper award in 2018 and has presented his research at numerous international conferences. Most recently, he spoke to hierarchies of institutions at the Universidad de San Andrés in Argentina together with his co-author Dr Laust Schouenborg, and to his grounded research into Latin American conceptions of order at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and at the 2021 Annual Conference of the ISA. Moreover, Mr Taeuber serves as Secretary for the English School Section of the ISA.

Mr Taeuber is also the Founding Director of the political consultancy and think tank Stonepine Research and in that role advises practitioners of international relations and development on matters of foreign relations, policy, and strategy. He is available for public speaking enquiries and has, for example, been invited by the Chinese Scholars and Students Association to give a talk on the impact of the BRI on Sino-European relations and EU cohesion.
