Personal profile

Research overview

I am currently a first year PhD student working under the supervision of Prof Julia Prest and Dr Michael White. My thesis is entitled 'Modern socio-political debates in French historical musicals: class, gender, and marginalized groups in modern France'. I focus on how contemporary French historical musicals from 1980 to 2005 have represented important historical periods/characters in French history in order to mirror modern struggles and the shaping of identities through class, gender, and marginalized groups (LGBTQI+, immigration, disability).

So far, I am focusing on Les Misérables (1980 for the French libretto and 1985 for the English libretto), Napoléon (1984), Notre-Dame de Paris (1998) and Le Roi Soleil (2005).
