My research currently focuses on Scottish landed elites in the period c.1820-1920, examining the relationship between social status and national identity. I am specifically interested in the role of Scots in military leadership, and the maintainance of patrician roles in a changing landscape.
I undertook my PhD from 2022 to 2025 under the supervision of Dr Derek Patrick (School of History) and Professor Sir Hew Strachan (School of International Relations). My thesis focused on the commissioned officers of The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), c.1902-1918, examining their selection, socialisation and professional relationships, and the development of national and regimental identities in the Edwardian era and the First World War.
Previously, I studied history at the University of Dundee, graduating with first-class honours, before undertaking a Master of Research degree on the Officers of The Black Watch, 1902-1914, under the supervision of Professor Graeme Morton, graduating with distinction.
During my PhD I tutored on the module MO2008, 'Scotland, Britain and Empire (c. 1700-2000)'. I currently teach on MO1007, 'The Early Modern Western World, 1450-1770', and am a member of staff in the University Collections department (archival collections).
I am also a Postgraduate Member of the Royal Historical Society, a member of The Society for Army Historical Research and The Western Front Association, and am a researcher for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
